Stretch film used around a pallet of medical devices sits outside several packaging layers. That distance matters. It may unitise shipping cartons, but it does not create sterility, repair a damaged sterile barrier or replace a validated packaging system.
The wrapping instruction should state exactly where the film is permitted and which quality checks must be completed before the pallet enters dispatch.
Keep the packaging layers distinct
Identify the sterile barrier, protective carton, shipper carton and pallet wrap in the product’s approved packaging configuration. Warehouse staff should not open or modify inner packaging to improve pallet stability.
If a sterile pouch, tray seal or inner carton is damaged, quarantine the affected product under the quality system. Adding more outer film can hide the damage but cannot restore the validated barrier.
Use only released shipper cartons in the approved orientation. Check closures, tamper features and carton condition before palletising.
Control cleanliness at the wrapping point
Define whether pallet wrapping occurs inside or outside controlled areas. Store film rolls and dispensers according to the site’s cleanliness requirements and keep them off floors, dirty pallets and chemical storage surfaces.
A roll used in a general dispatch dock should not move into a cleaner packaging zone without an approved transfer and cleaning process. Clear appearance is not evidence that a roll is free from contamination.
Preserve traceability and release status
Do not cover product identification, batch or lot details, quantity labels, temperature indicators or release-status controls that must remain visible. Formal logistics labels should be applied in the position required by the carrier, customer and site procedure.
Where a pallet contains multiple lots, record the configuration and confirm that the warehouse system can trace every shipper carton. Stretch film should not be used to combine released and quarantined stock into one visually similar load.
Avoid crushing validated cartons
Medical-device shippers may be designed to protect trays, pouches or delicate components from compression. Apply controlled tension and inspect broad carton faces and corners as the wrap builds.
Bowing, a pronounced waist or crushed edges indicate that the pallet pattern or film force may be unsuitable. Do not assume the inner device remains protected because the outer load looks tidy.
Run distribution testing or route validation required by the product and quality system after any material or pattern change. A supplier demonstration is not a substitute for the manufacturer’s documented change-control process.
Plan controlled receipt and removal
Provide a safe cutting method that does not place blades against cartons. Inspect the pallet for punctures, water, tampering and shifted cartons before removing wrap. Retain photos or transport records where the quality system requires them.
When assessing hand stretch film, involve quality, regulatory and warehouse teams. Purchasing should not approve a substitution based only on micron and roll price when packaging validation or cleanliness controls may be affected.
