Plan stretch wrapping for glass sheets and solar panels without treating film as cushioning, surface protection or primary restraint.

Glass sheets and solar panels combine high mass, fragile edges and easily marked surfaces. Hand stretch film can retain dust covers or help unitise protective packaging, but direct film contact and excessive tension can damage the load it is meant to protect.
Begin with the rack, stillage or crate design. Film is the final containment layer, not the structure that keeps panels upright.
Separate the product surface from the film
Use approved interleaving, sleeves, corner protection and face protection specified for the product. Do not assume clear film is clean enough for direct contact with coatings, printed backsheets or polished glass.
Cling additives, trapped grit and pressure can leave marks. Ask the product manufacturer whether the proposed packaging material is compatible and whether panels require ventilation. Trial removal after the longest expected storage period and temperature exposure.
Protect edges before increasing tension
An exposed glass corner can puncture the film immediately. More tension makes that contact more severe. Fit purpose-designed edge and corner protection first, then apply only enough film to retain the protective pack and prevent loose components.
Check that corner pieces cannot migrate downwards during handling. Full-height boards or a designed frame may distribute force more consistently than small loose pads.
Keep the load on its designed angle
Panels are often transported on an A-frame or specialist stillage. The frame angle, restraints and contact surfaces control the product. Wrapping across the load should not pull it away from designed supports or place bending force on unsupported faces.
Do not route film over lifting points, fork pockets, rated straps, inspection labels or securing hardware. If the stillage supplier gives a wrapping method, follow it and record any deviation.
Plan safe unwrapping
The receiver needs to remove film without putting a blade against glass, cables or panel backsheets. Provide an accessible film tail or approved cutting path outside the product envelope. The load must remain stable after each layer is removed.
Photograph the finished stillage and critical protection points. At receipt, check film tears, displaced pads, frame movement and surface condition before dismantling the load.
The NHVR advises that ordinary stretch wrapping alone is not suitable for restraining heavier loads or loads with edges that can penetrate the film. Glass and solar products illustrate both limitations.
When trialling hand stretch film, use a representative packed panel system and complete handling route. Testing an empty frame tells little about surface pressure or load movement.
FAQ
Can stretch film replace foam or interleaving?
No. Film is not cushioning and should not be assumed compatible with sensitive surfaces.
Should the film be very tight around an A-frame?
Use only the tension validated for the designed pack. High tension can move protectors or apply unwanted force to the panels.
Is black film better for solar panels?
Do not assume it provides suitable light or heat protection. Obtain material data and consider heat build-up, inspection and label visibility.
For fragile panels, the engineered frame and protective pack do the heavy work. The pallet wrapping film should support that system without touching, hiding or loading vulnerable components.
